90
Over 90 and in Great Shape! Something to strive for!
Key West
Two years ago four couples purchased tickets for the Key West Express, but they did not go because I ended up in the hospital with heart problems. This was our year to go, 2018, and the last year the tickets were valid. On Dec. 13 we boarded the Key West Express for a bumpy ride bound for Key West and the Southernmost Hotel.
After checking in we headed out for a lunch of the most delicious extra large Red Shrimp I have ever eaten. We walked all around the Mallory Square area, toured Truman’s small White House, Key West Lighthouse, shopped, toured the Butterfly Sanctuary that was so hot I couldn’t take it and ate at our first food truck that turned out to be delicious.
The next morning, before the lines formed, we took a group picture at the zero mile marker and continued to ride the FREE, yes Key West has a free bus with a route all around town. Seems most people purchase bus passes before they find out about the Free Bus! We all have one humorous memory of Joan and the Free Bus Driver!
One curious thing we noticed is that Roosters and Chickens are like squirrels up north, they are everywhere. Add the huge iguanas and you know you are in Key West!
Four couples had a Great time in Key West!
Choices
Happy Trails or Periwinkle Park
Last year it was Happy Trails in Surprise, AZ and this year it is back to Sanibel, FL. Sanibel is amazing because of the Gulf view while AZ is amazing because of the mountains. Happy Trails is amazing because of all the activities which is the biggest thing Sanibel is lacking. Down time on Sanibel is easy to fill with shelling and gazing at the Gulf while down time in AZ gets a bit boring, but there is only down time when you do not participate. Oh what to do????
President Truman trail
President Truman
We visited Independence, MO, the home of President Truman. Truman is remembered as a great President because of all of the important decisions he had to make. His rule was the ‘Buck Stops Here’ and he made his choices on what he felt was the correct thing to do.
The covered wagon pulled by mules town tour is more than worth the cost.
One item I found humorous is the fact that he is remembered as an amazing family man, but his wife and daughter spent very little time with him when he was President. Bess just did not like that life and she stayed home in MO with their daughter so she could attend the same school and be with her friends. When our current President’s wife did this for their son she was heavily criticized.
Space
Huntsville, AL
Huntsville is the home of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, a Smithsonian Affiliate, which is the home of Space Camp. I have heard about Space Camp for years and was finally able to see what it was all about.
The Saturn V rocket is on display here showing us the cramped quarters in which the astronauts shot to the moon. The International Space Station and Shuttle program were developed in this area. The Apollo 16 Capsule is on display with visible signs of things that happened to it while in space.
We viewed space via a three D movie and came out thinking we were astronauts!
Georgia
Savannah, GA
Wormsloe is located outside Savannah, GA. The picturesque entrance meanders through the estate and is lined with over 400 live oak trees planted in the early 1890s to commemorate the birth of De Renne’s son, Wymberley Jr. The masonry archway entrance was erected to mark Wymberley coming of age. Descendents of Noble Jones still live on the estate. There is one wall standing of the original house that took almost 6 years to build. Although Noble Jones and his family are no longer buried on the grounds their original grave sites are still in tact.
Pooler, GA
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is located in Pooler, GA. This museum is to honor Air Force personnel from mechanics to pilots. There is a B-17 Bomber on display along with many uniforms and awards.
The Fly Girls of WWII has an exhibit and what hit me most is that the U.S. government refused to pay to bring their bodies home if they were killed.
