Football

We have attended all of the home games at Hononegah since Phil is coaching this year. He has been doing a great job and they are undefeated! Friday night, in pouring rain, they played the other NIC10 undefeated team, the Auburn Knights. Ironically Auburn is from the far South side of Rockford and mostly African American while Hononegah is predominately white.
First, as I indicated, it was pouring rain! We put on our rain gear and got to our seats and were then amazed. So many fans, on our side, came in sweatshirts but zero rain gear. It was raining all day and then they were shocked to find wet seats! We took boat cushions to set on cause they don't soak up the water and are soft! By game time fans were soaked and freezing and had to leave. Phil’s parents and all of us were dressed warm and dry! I admit they might have had on cute outfits for the first 10 minutes but then they were wet and not so nice and their hair was soaked and make up was running. Then a couple came and decide the reserved seats were empty in front of us so they would take them. Fine, Except they had a huge umbrella that was right in our faces and blocked our view. I asked them to put it down and they said they could not or they would get wet. I informed them that I could not see over their umbrella and water was pouring off it onto my legs. He said you have on boots and a rain suit so what. Then Duf said in a gruff voice ,”She can't see. MOVE” So they got up and moved and we watched this happen over and over. Umbrella in bleachers is not a good idea! Sorry for the rant but I was shocked at how people were unprepared!
This is cute I think!
As we have seen all year the visitors enter the field first to their selected theme song, run to the opposite 20 yard line and back to their goal post. The home team is under their goal post and watches till they have their turn. Auburn entered to some hard core type song and instead of stopping on the 20 yard line ran to the Hononegah team and around them in a show of power I guess. Phil said coaches were shocked and saying be Calm to the players. Then Hononegah’s song came on and before coaches could tell the players to stay calm they took off running BUT Auburn had stopped on their 40 yard line and lined up across the field to block Hononegah from going to the 20 yard line. OMG it seemed tense until the Hononegah selected Mile Cyris song, Party in the USA,  came on and the show of force evaporated as all the Auburn players began to dance to the music. The Hononegah players stopped, hesitated a bit and then they started to dance! Ha it looked so pleasant to see them be kids and forget being serious. A bunch of big football players dancing and all the cheerleaders ran out and they were all dancing. Then  all high fives and ran to their sides and the game was on. It was a slippery game and Phil was glad for the rain because Auburn has astro turf  and it has been dry out. Hononegah has a grass field and it was wet and he said that was in their favor. Sportmanship was just amazing on both sides and that is so great to observe. Hononegah 29 - Auburn 6.   Hononegah has two more games and they are the only undefeated team now!

They played in the rain again this week but it was an away game so we did not attend. Next Friday they play the school we taught at so we might attend. So far Hononegah is undefeated!!
