When you can ride a tram to the top of Sandia Mountain. The Tram took us to the Sandia Peak that was 10,378 feet up in the mountains. The other side of the mountain is a ski resort, ride the tram up and ski down. The tram ride was 15 minutes up and 15 minutes down and we were over 1000’ above the beautiful valley below.
At the top we ate at the High Finance Restaurant and walked around in the snow!
After riding down on the tram we found highway 550 which was an unimproved or dirt and rock road. We took this road over the mountain. On the way we found Sandia Cave which is a National Historic Landmark that required a hike of 1/2 mile into the forest. A half mile doesn’t seem like much but at an altitude of 10,000 feet the air is thin and it is hard to catch your breath. At the mine we had to walk up winding stairs, the mouth of the mine was large but it quickly narrowed to a crawl space. We did not go into the crawl area because it was wet and we were scared!
At the end of highway 550 we took a newly black topped road to the top of another mountain, The Scandia Crest House. Once again the view was amazing!
