We are in Anchorage where there are more planes than cars! Alaska has few roads, so most of the population flies! Sixteen is the age to get a drivers license and fourteen is the age to get a pilots license in Alaska! There is water all around and that is where most of the small planes land. The small planes either have pontoons or fat glacier tires.
This is a hub for international shipping, we are about 9 hours by air from major routes. UPS has a huge hub here, pilots stop overnight on their long flights.
Earthquakes are common in this area, the soil is ash and moves when it gets wet. A quake must be over 6.5 for the news to report that it even occurred.
We took a trip up into the mountains and it was so clear we could see Denali off in the distance. It is amazing to think that we were able to see over 100 miles.
