It was an amazing drive entering the rainforest of Steward, BC/Hyder, AK. This area was once a port town until the water level receded and ships could no longer make it up the the narrow fjord. This fjord forms a natural ice free boundary between Alaska and Canada. Gold, silver and copper mines were the draw to this area. Hyder still has a copper mine that is active.
Hyder is famous for the Fish Creek bear viewing area. Grizzly and Black bears come to Fish Creek to feast on the salmon. We also saw a wolf in the creek enjoying a salmon dinner.
Seventeen miles up a gravel road is Salmon Glacier. Once again we took Mike’s Jeep and got off the road to get closer to the glacier. We drove over creeks and straight up hills and his Jeep performed amazingly! We were so high up it snowed!
On our way out of Steward, BC it was raining and then there was the most beautiful rainbow behind us and a Black Bear crossing the road in front of us. It was hard to know which picture to take first!
