Last night on the news the mayor of Eugene stated that she wanted to get rid of the 'travelers' that were around town.  We are travelers and wondered why she would not want us in town spending money. Today as we drove and walked around town we began to understand what 'travelers' she was talking about. Every corner has a young couple, travelers', with a sign asking for food. When they are offered food they refuse it saying they want money. We noticed that these 'travelers' had tats and were smoking, both fairly expensive habits.
One young lady 'traveler'  tried to engage me in a conversation about why I did not want to give her money. I asked her why she did not consider getting a job and earning money in each location they decided to travel. She informed me that the government gives them money when they do not work and asking people for money is something to do, like a part time job.
I admit I do not understand this lifestyle choice. My 'traveler' friend informed me that most of the people where we were had college educations, but found this a less stressful lifestyle.
Tonight on the news a group of 'travelers' started a fire in a park downtown to protest the fact that the mayor does not want them here. This is so sad because there are huge fires all around this area burning thousand of acres.
