Alpine, TX was a two hour drive through oil fields and telephone poles supporting electric wires to the pumps. We found a nice RV park called Lost Alaskan RV Park, fitting because we were just in Alaska. We got set up in our sites and headed for Fort Davis National Historic Site. The town of Fort Davis sets at the highest elevation in Texas at 5,050 feet.
Fort Davis is one of the best remaining examples of a restored frontier military fort in the country. From 1854 to 1891 this fort protected travelers on the San Antonio-El Paso Road. We walked through the barracks and hospital. The best medical practices were used but they were sure primitive compared to today. We ate dinner at the Fort Davis drug store and soda shop. It was like stepping back into the past. They made Dr. Pepper the old fashion way with syrup and sparkling  water.
